VETERINARY SPECIALTY REFERRAL CENTERS
If your pet has a serious disease or condition, the doctors at Deer Run Animal Hospital may recommend referral to a Specialty Referral Hospital, or University Teaching Hospital, for advanced diagnostic evaluation and 24 hour care and treatment by board certified specialists.
Our recommendation for referral means that we want your pet to have the kind of care you might find at the University of Chicago, or Mayo Clinic. Board certified specialists will have a minimum of four years of advanced education and training in their specialty, beyond veterinary medical school.
Referral will give you access to best state of the art care for your pet. Working with a specialist helps us to develop a team approach to give you pet the best possible outcome from a serious illness. We are not simply sending you away to a specialist. We are developing a team that we can not only rely on for an acute crisis, but will also be there to guide us with more chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, or glaucoma.
There are many board certified veterinary specialties. Most fall under two categories, the American Colllege of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). In addition there are other specialties such as board certified veterinary ophthalmologists, dentists, behaviorists, and radiologists. Click this link for a more complete Listing of Specialties and their associated web sites.
